Making of the Shamisen - Kawa - Part 1 について・・・
http://shamisenofjapan.com/ Updated Note: This was the very first attempt at making a tsugaru shamisen. Three years later, I've made an exact (at least, "close enough") duplicate of a tsugaru shamisen and have made a book to teach you how to do the same. This book, Shamisen of Japan, gives you full instructions on how to make and play tsugaru shamisen. If you are interested in tsugaru shamisen, check it out! http://shamisenofjapan.com/
This is probably by far (I think) the coolest part of the process (it's probably more fun doing it than watching it), stretching the skin (Kawa).
At Shamisen-Katoh.com, Kenji Katoh says that stretching the skin makes him pant. I thought it was an exaguration but when I stretched the skin, I had to take a few extra breaths myself.
The first time I stretched it, it sounded tight (when tapped) but as it dried, the expanded and the tone dropped considerably so I restretched it to make it acceptable.
